Whois_JG Interview
Who are some of your biggest influences?
“I grew up listening to only Spanish music, pop, and r&b. Artists like Bruno Mars, Mike Posner, Jerimiah, and Chris Brown. It wasn’t until when I was 13 my uncle gave me an MP3 with songs already downloaded. That’s where I found rap. My parents didn’t listen to English music besides the radio, so I was never really exposed to rap. Once I got this MP3, I found out who 50 Cent, Fat Joe, Eminem, Biggie Smalls, Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, and all the older rappers. Once I started making my own music I was really influenced by the melodic rapping sound, I liked the way they could rap and sing I thought I could do that. I knew from the jump I wanted to write like them. My sound got influenced by those early years plus once I got older and started listening to A Boogie, Drake, Polo G, Miguel, and Lil Tjay. I like rapping bout love and heartbreaks, but also bout real life shit. Telling stories with a message. I like the that timeless music that you can hear when you’re driving alone. Don’t get me wrong I love rage and hype music too when I’m trying to get lit, but I feel like those songs come and go.”
What is it like growing up in the Washington music scene?
“I grew up in Wenatchee, WA. It’s in the middle of the state about 2.5 hours from Seattle. Honestly, there is like no music scene there. I would hear of a couple of artists while I was in high school, but they would stay consistent or be making that much noise. Nobody really hosting shows or nothing. The one person I kept seeing grind in Wenatchee was EMB Flame, I met him about 5 years ago. He was doing shows here and their bud was constantly dropping music and music videos. About a year ago I decided to take music seriously. He was actually the first person I reached out to when I decided to take it next level. We started working together a lot. I met a couple of artists through him. In April of last year I actually decided to host my first show since there was no music scene here. I added the local artist I knew to a group chat, gave them a date, time, and venue price, and asked if they wanted to host a show for the valley. We ended up hosting SnatchBatch one of the craziest shows I’ve performed at till this date and Iv done about 18 shows now, after pretty much stuck together and having hosted a couple more shows, starting to create a scene in our town. We also just had our first Toy Drive this last Christmas trying to connect with the community. We all became a collective and a family under the brand Humble&Fearless. We also have been connecting with the rest of Washington doing shows and meeting artists. Every town has a different vibe, mostly people are super nice and supportive. But there are a lot of artists who got a big ego and think they are better than everyone else. I guess every music scene has those people. But it seems like Washington as a whole is definitely growing as a music hotspot.”
What are your interests outside of music?
“Outside of music, I honestly don’t do much lol. I work my regular 9-5, Hang out at home with my girl and my husky. I like to game a lot, I like RPGs, 2K, and I’m a big FIFA guy. I grew up playing soccer so it will always be something I’m into. Recently in the past couple of years I’ve been really into anime too, haha some of my friends and family think it’s nerdy but honestly, the stories in the animes are the best. I also like event planning, for my team I’m usually the organizer when it comes to setting up events or stuff like that. I think I’d like to do that as a side gig soon. Iv been getting more connections and have been more involved with venues and artists so I might end up doing that in the future.”
How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened to you?
“The way I would describe my music is that every song is a different experience of emotion. I try to tell a story or a message in every song. I think my music is relatable. Every song is a collection of memories or feelings that I’ve had. I try to focus on an emotion or feeling and write what I felt in those moments. Some are happy some are sad. I would say have an open mind. I love being able to speak 2 languages because I can explain my experiences and memories to more people around the world. I know I’m not the only one feeling the things I say, I know anyone can relate.”
What does music mean to you?
“Music to me is therapy. Music is my best friend. Music is the person I can vent to about anything. I can tell it when I’m feeling good, bad, sad, or mad. Anything I want. I always think back to this quote I heard in a movie, it comes from a guy named Friedrich Nietzsche, it says “Without music, life would be a mistake”. I truly believe that. Idk, I mean music has been there for me at my worst and best times. It just means a lot to me.”
What can fans expect from you within the next 3 months?
“Within the next 3 months hopefully I will have my LitPeroSad movie done. I dropped a Reggaeton debut album and plan on dropping a music video of the whole album with a story type feeling. Hopefully, drop videos for my Long Way Home Ep that just dropped too. I have a EP dropping with Apollo Mantikos also. Mmm and we are hosting a show 5 De Mayo “SnatchBatch 2”, it’s going to go nuts. If you haven’t seen the recap for the first one go look at it, hopefully, it will make you come to the show. It’s on Humble&Fearless YouTube channel.”
What song would you recommend to someone who has never listened to you and why?
“If I had to choose one song, mm that’s a tuff question. Honestly probably my new song off my new ep. The song is called UANME, the title was just a cool way of spelling You and Me lol. But anyway, I think that song is the one. It definitely shows my improvement on my sound and how far I have come with my craft. The way I flow, lyrics, adlibs, the energy, the sound, idk I just am really proud of that song. I made it in English but also threw some Spanish in there to show both sides of my music. It’s a love song with a story which I feel are always my best songs.”
Where do you find inspiration?
“My inspiration comes from just my life experiences and memories I’ve had. A collection of feelings and emotions during those events. I like writing things that are relatable. The good and the bad times. Times when I was at my highest and times when I was at my lowest.”
Do you prefer to record during the day or night and why?
“I honestly don’t mind what time it is as long as I’m a little buzzed and the recording room is dark lol. I like the record in the dark no matter if it’s a lit or sad song. I just like the feeling of being alone in a dark room with just the sounds haha. My engineer always laughs at it but he knows when ima record to turn the lights off lol.”
If you could get a feature from anyone right now who would it be and why?
“Mainstream if really want a feature with Drake obviously lol, Lil Tjay, A Boogie, Polo G or J.I the Prince, they’re all fye. Around Washington, I really think I could make something crazy with Xavier Weeks, Wayne Grey, Bxchii, they go crazy on melodic stuff. I really wanna drop Reggaeton Music with Leytian he in the west side too, he got fye music.”
Last question, do you have any advice for people wanting to step into the music industry?
“Just be a good person, work hard, grind, get your face out there and never be “Too Cool”. There’s also a lot of artists around my area that make dope music! Like fye fye. But they aren’t consistent, don’t put their face out there, their social media is ghost. Idk I know sometimes you don’t want to be out there but honestly now days you have to. Build your brand and grow your presence. Also always stay humble, and never be too cool for anyone or anything.”
