Jasonb interview
Who are some of your biggest influences?
“The people who have had the biggest influence on my music so far would be bands like Deftones, nirvana, The descendants, Green Day & Paramore, and then solo artists such as Dominic Fike, Frank Ocean, Mac Miller, X, and then Kanye because of his never-ending creativity with his sound. I also have to shout out my older brother for surrounding me with a punk environment since I was a kid. There are so many others from so many genres too but that’s just to name a few.”
What is it like growing up in the Washington music scene?
“Growing up in the Washington music scene is different from anywhere else. From Seattle to Olympia there are artists that have such diverse styles from punk to indie to rap that come together to work with each other and at every show, there are so many different types of people that you will run into in the pit. So overall the Washington scene is sick and I think with the way that our area has been moving lately it’s growing into something beautiful as we speak.”
What are your interests outside of music?
“Music consumes a nice portion of my life. But outside of shows and creating I like to skate, snowboard, and hoop. Also just spending time with the homies, my girlfriend, and my dog doing whatever random side missions we run into. I’m constantly on the search for something new.”
How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened to you?
“If I had to describe my music to someone who’s never heard of me. I would tell them that it’s a few of my favorite genres that I brought together to make my own sound. Honestly, it’s hard to describe what I sound like because my albums are bipolar.”
What does music mean to you?
“Music to me means so many different things. Just because it can be used in so many different ways so basically with every song that I write I try to express myself or inspire others. If people are gonna listen to me while they’re driving to work or to a function I want to be telling them something that’s worth hearing. Whether that’s something that they can relate to or some words that make them want to get out of bed in the morning and get things done. Sometimes there are songs that I make just to make people feel good too.”
What can fans expect from you within the next 3 months?
Within the next month or two I’m going to put out a 4 song remastered album with some better quality on the songs that people continue to listen to. And then by June, I want to try and have a full album with the new rock sound that I’ve been making lately. And I will most definitely continue to do shows with summer coming up hopefully the music community can put together some beautiful events.”
What song would you recommend to someone who has never listened to you and why?
If you’ve never heard of me the first song I’m going to suggest you listen to is “RUMINE?”. That’s my favorite song that I’ve made at this point in time. It has a mix of alternative rock and hip hop with an upbeat vibe that I think and hope people will enjoy the feeling of while telling a relatable story in the song. Also, jaydynf bodies his verse on that so there’s another plus.”
Where do you find inspiration?
“I like to make my music personal to me so I get inspired by things that I do like skateboarding and then by things that happen to me and that I see happening around me. Another thing that inspires me are artists that can make music that puts me into a whole other mood while I’m bumping them. Also, I find a lot of inspiration from fashion. I think music and fashion go hand in hand.”
Do you prefer to record during the day or night and why?
“When I first started making music by myself I had a routine of waiting until around 1:00 am setting up my recording stuff and then turning off all the lights in my room to record. Now it’s really whenever I feel the creative energy at any time of day.”
If you could get a feature from anyone right now who would it be and why?
“If we’re taking local artists then I would have to go with Jon Mercer or Noah. They kill it and have sounds that are unique from anyone else in their music. Aside from locally, I would have to say a Dominic Fike or Hayley Williams feature would go insane.”
Last question, do you have any advice for people wanting to step into the music industry?
“Just a few things to tell people. Don’t be egotistical, don’t pass up any opportunity that you see, and don’t give up on yourself when you don’t make a hit song within your first month of making music. Find people who show you genuine love and show it back and then build a community and team through those people. No matter who it is if they’re really rocking with you, keep them in your life.”
