Iggy Jones
Background and Influences:
Who are some of your biggest influences?
All time X, Ye, and G Eazy. Currently, I’ve been on a bunch of weird French indie shit.
Where are you from?
Everett, WA
How has your upbringing and experiences impacted the type of music you make?
I think growing up I always had this itch to be the best. I am not sure where that came from, maybe a need for attention or something like that but I have always strived to be the best at whatever I do.
What was the first song you ever released and can you still find it online?
Yes, Intro (Young) lol. The lyrics still stand. Click To Watch
Creative Process:
Where or what do you get most of your inspiration from?
I watch a lot of anime and the hero's journey is something that always fuels me. I’m a sucker for the main character.
Can you walk us through a typical songwriting process?
I generally get a beat from Speks and I just start flowing on it in my notes and write whatever comes to my head and adjust it later to fit the topic. I just started producing and sometimes I will have some lyrics written with no beat and I will create it from scratch or I will make a beat and just kinda comp it as I go.
How do you know when a song is finished?
I don't really know. It has to hit all the basic criteria of sounding full and concise with the original vision but then past that I guess it’s just a feeling. Speks helps me out with that decision lots or whoever's engineering the song.
What are some challenges you face when writing and recording a song?
I think oftentimes I try so hard to stay busy and keep working to the point I get burnt out and get some writer's block. Of course, finances are always a struggle when it comes to recording at the studio and recording at home its all good but I am still learning and need a better mic and shit (I’m using a fucking snowball right now)
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you write?
No not really, I am always writing, a lot of times I write a lot while driving. Not very safe but its a time to myself that I can really just think.
Music Career and Goals:
What is your main goal for your music career?
I want to be the best. I also want to help build the community up and do my part of making a vibrant music scene in Seattle.
How do you reach a new audience?
Shit, I’m still trying to figure that out.
How do you handle criticism?
Pretty well if it's from a place of productivity, I think there's a difference between hater shit and criticism.
What message are you trying to convey through your music?
Well as of lately I just want to produce a positive message and try to spread that same feeling that watching Naruto gives me, but in an audible form.
What are your current thoughts about the music scene in your city?
It is fantastic and only growing. Yonny and Oble are making such a cool and authentic wave that I really enjoy. There are lots of people doing some really cool shit but those are the two at the top IMO.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have navigating the music industry?
Nothing is ever what it seems and even if you've got talent and potential most folks just want to get paid so don't expect anyone to invest in you, invest in yourself.
Delve Deeper:
Can you share the most pivotal moment in your music career so far?
Probably leaving the band I was in. I think I was lulled into a weird agenda that we all created, some ego-fueled bullshit that I don’t think ever would've worked.
How do you balance being an artist and making music with other aspects of your life?
Not very well. Working 9-5 and trying to do this music shit is damn near impossible. Not a lot of time for anything but music and money.
What kind of impact do you want your music to have?
I want to give kids hope and inspire them to chase their dreams. That’s really it.
What advice would you give an aspiring artist or someone thinking of becoming an artist?
Keep it real. Fabricating an image will almost never work.
